Mt. Bonnell Real Estate

Touted as the "best view in Austin," Mt. Bonnell stands about 775 feet above sea level, or about 200 feet above Lake Austin. Despite its relatively unimpressive elevation, Mt. Bonnell offers a panoramic view of Lake Austin, nearby residential districts, and glimpses of the downtown skyline.

Mt. Bonnell is located in Covert Park in west Austin, although few locals would recognize the name "Covert" Having nothing to do with concepts of secrecy, the park was actually named after Frank M. Covert Sr., who donated a tract of land to Travis County in 1938. In the 1970s, the city acquired the property and converted it into a park. The centerpiece, of course, was Mt. Bonnell.

A popular getaway for tourists, hikers, and lovers, Mt. Bonnell carries with it many folk legends and tall tales. One legend states that any couple who climbs the 100 stone steps to the top of the mountain will fall in love. Do it twice, and you′ll get engaged. Three times, and marriage is on the way. On a more historical note, local tradition has it that Mt. Bonnell was the site of a young woman′s suicidal leap to avoid capture by the Indians who had killed her lover. Today, safety precautions have been taken to prevent such dramatic action.

Many of the neighborhoods around Mt. Bonnell are filled with large, affluent houses with great property values. Given the surroundings, it is not difficult to imagine why residents chose to live there.
